The End of FanLit
Posted by CM under Writing on Fri 27 Oct 2006
anlit’s done. I can barely believe that scarcely over a month ago, I submitted my first entry. Over the course of that month, my life has changed drastically.
Well, drastically. Erm. Let’s see. I’m still in the same job, and I’m still planning on doing the same job after I finish this one. I haven’t decided not to do anything as a result of FanLit. It’s just that I’ve decided to do … well, something in addition. And if I’m going to do something additional, I need to start somewhere.
Some might say I should start with “The Goddess of Small Things,” and I have to admit, it’s tempting. But it just doesn’t seem like the right time in my life for that one. And so instead, I have another story I’m thinking about. It’s not quite there yet, and that’s mostly because I don’t quite grok my characters yet. It’s been my experience with FanLit that I can’t plot to save my life. What I can do is figure out who the characters are, and where I want to get them, and then shade in all the little details.
Er. I suppose that’s plotting.
And I suppose this entry is why I called this blog “Ramblings.”

You have a blog! *squee* I’m so glad you’re going to keep writing. No, that’s an understatement. I’m -thrilled- you’re going to keep writing. I can’t wait to hear about the new project.

Hi Courtney–
Just wanted to say I’m thrilled you’re going to pursue writing. I think you are enormously talented.
And your method of writing matches mine precisely.
JQ, who can’t plot my way out of a paper bag
P.S. Will get to your email as soon as I can

I love your new blog! So very cool! You wrote wonderful things on Avon FanLit, no matter how much you may have disliked it!
From a fellow, um, adder to my already long list of activities, I hope to see you out there in print, soon!

I love your blog! And not just because it links to mine, or because Julia Quinn has commented on it!
You are so brilliant and talented, and we are so fortunate to receive the pearls of wisdom tossed in our direction by your well-manicured hand. I can’t wait to see what great things you do next.

Just so you know, the hands are not normally manicured. The picture was taken right after I had to get all spiffed up for a special occasion. It was the second time I’ve painted my nails in eight years.
But seriously, Eve … you know you’re going to be doing great things, too. Don’t you dare put me on a pedestal; we’re climbing the staircase together.

Okay I am going to add a third *sqeee*!! What a fabulous blog and website, Courtney!! I am so glad you are going to keep on writing…and when you leave the top-secret job, I will definitely be lining up to buy your book! You are so completely talented, the romance community can’t help but see great things from you in the future.
