this is a first novel, and so I read it with interest to see what sells for the first time.

It was mostly excellent. Both the hero and the heroine were intelligent characters with considerable depth, although I kind of felt like the depth in some ways was like cardboard cutouts–see, hero has depth because such-and-such has happened to him, and he’s tortured! I could never quite figure out whether the hero or the heroine was supposed to be the Raven Prince. So–his home is Ravenhill, and he’s a boy, and that makes you think he’s the Raven Prince. But she’s the one who–well, that would be a spoiler, so I won’t say it.

In short, it felt just a little–not a lot, just a little–unpractised. Which is to say that it was marvelous and I eagerly await her next books, because I suspect they’re only going to get better.
