The Literacy Signing Report
Posted by CM under Racism in Romance on Thu 12 Jul 2007
ell, I attended the Literacy Signing last night. I hadn’t realized quite how long it was going to take, and I got fewer books than I had intended over all. I made an effort to avoid the long queues for major authors (even though I love and adore many of them) because I wanted to hit up authors who I either wouldn’t normally see, or who I liked and wanted to “boost.”
Not only did I get my 1:1 ratio, I beat it. I ended up with 10 books total (6 from African-American Authors). I wanted to do more, but it was 6:45 by the time I hit book #10, my friends were throwing me a birthday party starting at 7, and the checkout line was looking horrendously long.
So, I got:
Patricia Sargeant’s “You Belong to Me” (She’s a new author–this is her first book! I talked to her for a while, and she was an absolutely lovely person. I’m just dying to read this one.)
Shirley Hailstock’s “My Lover, My Friend”
Wayne Jordan’s “One Gentle Knight.” (Wayne, if you can’t tell by the name, is a man–he told me he loved reading romance, and loved writing it. He was very brave to enter those estrogen-filled halls.)
Francis Ray’s “Irresistible You,” which is set in Santa Fe, one of my favorite places in the United States.
And two books from Kayla Perrin–”Gimme an ‘O’” and “Getting Some.”
I’m really looking forward to getting to read and know these authors. I picked up four other books as well, and only wish I had had a little more time. Every author I met and talked to was truly wonderful. It’s true what they say–there’s a fabulous romance community out here. And it’s wonderful to be a part of it.

I’ve never read any of them, but I loved the way Shirley Hailstock ran RWA. She’s a very strong woman.

I think your experiment is awesome, and giving new (and therefore lesser-known) authors your attention is a really nice thing to do. I’m sure they appreciated it a ton.
And happy birthday!

Hope you had as great a time at the conference as I did! I had a blast hanging out with you and the crew, and hope to see everyone again next year! =)

It was great to meet you! Thanks for letting me bunk up with you. I had a horrible time at the literacy signing. It was very crowded and hot. Thanks to Gladys for keeping me watered. I swear I was going to faint. Other than that, I bought quite a few Ellora’s Cave authors. One was a gal from a nearby RWA chapter. I’m still recovering. Then again a root canal at 10 am doesn’t help much either.

I blame you for my being late to your party. I had to get out of that LONG line at the signing and snag another author in order to live up to your example. Luckily for me, the book looks HAWT!

I’m really really touched by what you did. After last year’s literary signing I was all for not taking part this year. I sold two books last year and it left me feeling pretty down for a while. I keep wondering what it’s so difficult for non-black readers to pick our books up and give them a try; seeing us, not as AA romance authors, but romance author - period.
I admire you for your desire to help put an end to the way we’re discounted by RWA members at the literary signing.
Ironically, I sold over 30 books this year more that 20 were purchased by white readers/authors. If this is an indication that change is talking place, then I feel a sense of accomplishment and comment your for leading the pack.
Of course, when you sell your first book, I’ll be in line waiting. Because, not only are you a nice person, but from your blog, I can tell you have the voice.
