read historical romance debuts, of course. In part it’s research–what’s selling, and why? But in part it’s just good plain fun. There are very few debut novels that are absolutely perfect (off the top of my head, I can think of only twothree “first novels” that I would describe as absolute perfection–Watership Down, by Richard Adams, Bridge of Birds, by Barry Hughart, and The Chosen, by Chaim Potok). But this month I’ve been delighted to read two that are pretty darned close–and yet nothing at all alike!
The first book I read was an ARC of Private Arrangements, by Sherry Thomas. These were floating around Nationals. I started reading it in the hall after Chris Journal kindly gave me a copy; I then walked to my room (still reading) and sat on my bed. And then I read, and read, and read. Sherry Thomas is a gorgeous writer. Every moment when I was reading, I felt as if I were in a gorgeously-decorated classical house. Everywhere I looked there was something beautiful and unexpected. And there were parts that were absolutely heart-wrenching. It was definitely a powerful, emotional read.
The second book I picked up was To Tempt a Scotsman by Victoria Dahl. It was out in my Borders early. This book was cleverly witty without being self-conscious. The characters seemed like people I could have met just off the street, and I liked them both almost instantly. I found myself turning the pages faster and faster, with a smile on my face.
Neither of these books were perfect, but they both had something perfect about them: The author’s voice. In each case, the voice was atmospheric. In Sherry Thomas’s case, the voice was clever and classically beautiful, cool as a mountain stream. In Victoria Dahl’s case, it was warm and witty, soft, like a favorite blanket. In both cases, I ended the book with a sigh and a smile. What more could you ask?
What debuts have you read recently? What’s struck you about them?

Seems to me Sherry Thomas was mentioned a couple of other places too. I think she got some outrageously high advance or some such. I’ll have to keep an eye peeled for both books.

Like you, I read Sherry Thomas’ Private Arrangements. I agree about her voice. It was elegant and the descriptions were wonderful. I was able to read it in about a day and a half (while at work), which is good for me, considering I work 10 hour days. I can only dream of having a voice as superbly elegant as that.

I’m reading His Majesty’s Dragon, the first novel by Naomi Novik which you may have seen reviewed over at SBTB a couple of weeks ago. Her narrative voice in this series is very much like Patrick O’Brian’s, and it’s the first series in a long time where, after reading a few pages from the library copy, I bought all the books that were out so far instead of taking it a book at a time to play it safe.

Oh, Estelle. More authors to put on my TBR list. And it’s already so crowded.
And I still have so many books from Dallas!
Both these books are must-reads, ESPECIALLY for aspiring authors. I’m getting the sense that it’s not about the plot (although–quite honestly–I’m also getting the sense that super-hot sure can’t hurt, and both books delivered on that front). I’m also getting the sense that not all the sex has to be over-the-moon sex. Both PA and TTAS had sex scenes which weren’t totally perfect, if you know what I mean. In PA, there was one that was almost heart-breaking; in TTAS, there was one that made me wince in a been-there done-that kind of way.
Both made the book stronger. Which makes me think of an interesting post….

Ah, voice.
Glad you liked the Victoria Dahl. I’ve been enjoying her comments for months now & will definitely put her on my TBB list!

Well, I’m still miffed that I didn’t score a copy of that Sherry Thomas book while at RWA. The excerpt I read online was great. I thought the writing was fresh. Am still smiling about the rumor spreading like a well-fed belly or gut or something.
I haven’t read any debuts recently. But I think they are great to read and study because the first book an author publishes really has to have something special.

I loved the Victoria Dahl book, too! And I’ve been hearing so much about Sherry Thomas’ book that I’m sure it’ll be great.

OMG, how did I miss this?!
I LOVE Bridge of Birds. Absolutely one of my favoritist books evah!
Have not read the Victoria Dahl debut, but I “know” her from Smart Bitches, so I’ll probably pick it up.
Have been making my way slowly through Private Arrangements. The writing is beautiful, but…well, let’s just say I have some issues :). Maybe if I ever get around to finishing it, we can dish!
