Pele pictures!

ook, it’s a puppy! Most of the pictures go after the jump so that those who are uninterested in puppies do not need to observe. Many thanks to all my wonderful friends who threw me a puppy shower in San Francisco. It was the last thing I expected at RWA–and as you can see, my little Pele loves your toys!

Oh. My. God. He’s So adorable, CM! I just want to mush his face and blow a raspberry on his belly. LOL. AND he’s playing with the toy Ginger and Precious picked out for him. awwww!
How is he doing? Is he settling in well? Using puppy pads?
You’ve got a gorgeous baby boy!

Hi Kim! He *loves* your toy–the squeaking, and the size of it allow him to wrap his paws all around it and just tear into it.
He is not using puppy pads–we’re trying to potty train him directly, and letting him pee in the apartment would interfere with that. This means that I am running in and out of the house every 30 minutes. We have had a few accidents, but Pele is a really smart dog. He will now go potty on command (if he has to go–if he doesn’t, he will give me an accusing look and wonder why on earth I am asking him to go when he is dry).
He has not yet figured out yet that he should NOT go inside, or that he should tell us if he has to go. We are working on that. Right now, I am teaching him how to ring a bell. Once he knows how to ring it (he’ll hit it with his nose now, but not hard enough to make noise–we’ll get there!) then we’ll start taking him outside every time he rings it, and hope that he makes the connection.

My daughter is in love with Pele. She’s asked if he can be her friend. I said, “Of course.” Little does she know Pele lives really, really far away. Bummer because she’d totally dog sit! (Okay, she’s only 7, but she’d love him up good!)
I have a friend who uses the bell ringing method. It’s like a front desk bell and sits by the back door. Works great.
What a great week for potty training. I’m happy to report my little boy (a real human for those wondering) has been without diapers since Sunday! Yay!!!
That’s one cute puppy, CM.

If your daughter fed Pele cheese, that puppy would be putty in her hands.

Awww! He’s the cutest, CM. Our Aussie, Skye, is thirteen, and we’ve been talking about getting a puppy. Pele’s pictures may be the push I need.

OMG CUTE!!!! He IS the most adorable puppy in the world! Congrats!
And awesome that you’re teaching him the bell trick - that’s even cuter. I dog-sit for a dog who does it, and it is quite handy.

Pele is the cutest dog ever! He’s a tiny ball of fur, and he’s sooo adorable! I want a puppy.
Thanks for sharing the pics… he’s such a cute puppy and looks like he bring a lot of joy.

Just look at that face!! Courtney, he is DARLING!! And what a handsome dog he will be. These photos qualify as DEFINITE Puppy Porn!! I LOVE his name, by the way! He is just too gorgeous for words. It sounds as if you have a real handle on the potty training. Consistency is ALWAYS the key. Remember to only reprimand him if you catch him in the act. To reprimand him after the fact would just confuse him. This particular breed is very high on the intelligence and eagerness to please scale so he should latch onto the bell idea very quickly. My late deaf Dane, Glory, was light trained. I had a push button next to the door that was wired to a red light bulb. She pushed the button and the light went on for her and a buzzer rang for me. I would recommend you teach Pele hand signals as well as voice commands. There will be situations in which he may not be able to hear you (crowd and park situations) but if he becomes as devoted to you as I KNOW he will, he will always watch you for his cues.
Congratulations, my dear. You have made a wonderful addition to your family - not to mention one of the cutest little fur babies I have ever seen!! I expect to see more pictures as he grows and a big obnoxious photo album in DC next year!

Louisa, we’re clicker training Pele, and so there are no reprimands at all–at best, passive negative reinforcement (ignoring him when he’s doing things we don’t like). So if he goes, I ignore him–and then when he does go outside, he gets clicked and petted and treated and cosseted like nobody’s business.
Right now, after one day, he’ll push the bell but hasn’t yet got the hang of hitting it hard enough to make it ring–partially because the sound startles him enough that he doesn’t hear the click when he does it right!
I will have pictures of Pele around often!

Oh, how I love Pele! And I haven’t met him yet. But I am so looking forward to that. And to giving my fabulous fabulous friends a giant hug. I assure you, Courtney, your talent sells itself, but I agree that the support of friends is important to all of us. Of course, you know how much you have given to me, and to others in our community.
Full body wriggle from me to Pele!
